Description
A view through the sluicings of the St Bathans goldfields site. These fabulous rock formations are the result of the work by gold prospectors in early Central Otago’s history. Water at high pressure was used to wash out the gold bearing soil and rocks for separation leaving these moonscape like formations. The site draws a large number of visitors each year, like the person in the picture trying to imagine what the site looked like before it turned into the present day lake, renowned for its beautiful colour on a clear sunny day.
